Balance: An Interactive Design Intervention

Balance is a temporary interactive installation intended to bring people together through the exploration of the word "balance." The physical installation was deployed at CSULB and people participated by writing or drawing something that they were trying to balance in their own life and/or how they seek balance in life.

Project Brief
Student teams set out to design an interactive intervention based on a word, construct it physically, and deploy it into space to have users interact with it. My team selected the word “balance” because as humans, we struggle to find balance in our everyday lives. Our final design was a banner constructed from chicken wire, laminated colored cellophane, and rope hung on beams at CSULB to cast a shadow of our chosen word onto the ground. Utilizing red and blue cellophane we created a balanced purple shadow. Users interacted with the installation by writing things they were trying to balance in their own lives and/or how they achieve balance in their lives around the shadow.

Installation
We hung our installation constructed of chicken wire, colored cellophane, and rope on the CSULB campus one afternoon. Its physical simplicity allowed the user interaction with it to stand out.
User Interaction
Users filled the ground space surrounding the shadow with components of their lives that they were seeking balance between as well as with methods they turn to in order to achieve balance. The results were more than we could have imagined.
